Chapter Fifteen.

“YOU TWO ARE SERIOUS, aren’t you?” I asked, my chest twisting uncomfortably.

“As a seizure,” Tania exclaimed, using an expression older than she was.

“Okay,” I said, deciding to prove they were wrong. “Tell me what I have to do, then, when it fails, I’m going back to my room for a sleeping tablet and a glass of red wine.”

That should knock the memories of this ludicrous conversation right out of my brain.

“Stand up and come over here, then read from our book,” Natalie said, making the instructions sound easy and harmless.

“All right.” I agreed, then pushed myself to my feet, a strange tremor in my voice as I said, “Then I’m going to leave and we’re all going to forget this happened.”

Neither of the girls said anything in response, instead rushing ahead to open the book and find a spell for me.

Fucking hell, this was ridiculous, and yet, kinda exciting. I’d wanted adventure, to do things I’d never done before, and now look at me.

“Just read the words, flick the wand, and let’s see what happens.” Tania pointed to a page that looked a hundred years old.

“Wow.” I gently ran my fingers over the paper. “Where did you get this book?”

“It was our mother’s,” Tania said, though she offered no explanation past that.

“Okay.”

At first, the words looked like some ancient language with hieroglyphics, but as I opened my mouth to say I couldn’t read it, the letters shifted and suddenly made perfect sense. “Oh... okay.” I stood in front of the lectern, lifted my wand, then read out the strange scripture, felling utterly ridiculous, as if I was in some sort of weird Halloween play.

Saying the final two words of the spell, I flicked my wand toward the rug in front of the cauldron, and a necklace materialized out of thin air. One second it wasn’t there, then the next a heavy silver chain was coiled on the carpet like a snake, with a huge red jewel set into it.

I gaped at it. “What is that?”

“Nice one!” Tania said, walking around the still bubbling cauldron to check out the piece of bling on the ground.

As I joined her by walking the same way, the words of Macbeth’s poem played in my head. Double, double toil and trouble. Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Tania squatted to look at the necklace but didn’t pick it up.

“You need to be the first one to touch it,” Natalie explained.

“Me?”

“Yes, you.” Tania glanced up at me. “You made it. It’s yours.”

“I...” Made it? Seriously?

I stepped onto the rug, reached down, and scooped up the necklace even though my bung knee complained of the movement.

It was even heavier than it first looked, and cold to the touch. The gem was a blood red, glowing in the light of the flickering fire.

“Wow,” I whispered as I stared into the jewel.

“Put it on,” Natalie said. “It’s to help you zero in on your trigger. Because once you have that, you’ll be able to focus and grow, and learn so much faster.
